Too Many Losses
Al Olthof - 8/5/02

Al Olthof

Since 9-11-01 we have all faced many losses. When a loss is personal, it makes it all the worse. I have faced an unusual number of losses in the past year, and it has been very difficult to deal with the emotional pain and sorrow those losses have caused me to feel. No, I didn't lose a loved one in The World Trade Center, but I have lost loved ones and the pain I feel cannot be any less then the anguish felt by the wives who are now widows and children who are orphans as a result of the collapse of one of America's greatest symbols.
My life didn't stop on 9-11-01, it only changed. The events of that tragic day caused the world to fundamentally change it's perception of reality, perhaps forever and irrevocably. We now live in a world that is no longer gentler and kinder, but harsh and severe, especially on our enemies. It seems that the son who governs has abandoned the policies of the father who once governed. Our Government and Military seem to be willing to bomb, bash, berate, and bully anyone the doesn't support them. Anyone that doesn't toe the party line could be subject to being labeled a terrorist and thrown into prison and stripped of any remaining Constitutional Rights, the same as the Al Qaeda supporters and soldiers captured in Afghanistan. This I consider a loss, a loss of personal freedom, a loss of constitutional rights, a loss in the trust of our government to protect and serve it's people. It seems that the Government feels that it is the master and the people are but pawns and servants, a reversal of roles. The servant has become the master...
What then, are the consequences of all this accumulated loss? To most, sadness and despair. To some, a shot of adrenalin that makes them want to fight. But to all, subjugation and even more loss to come.
So, the people of the world, not just in the United States, have faced many losses in the past year. Lost loved ones, lost property, lost wealth, lost honor, and lost civil rights. I hope we don't lose the will to persevere and keep forging ahead, in a positive humane and loving fashion, to overcome oppressive groups that keep humans from evolving into a race that the galaxy could embrace and welcome into it's family. We must stop the losses caused by those who do not want people to have joy, peace, and happiness.

This of course is only my opinion, it's right for me.
